Under the Same Proud Flag (or "DAMN YOU, HOPE!")

My rich and solid sense of snarky political cynicism, perfected since my early teens, started in early childhood (my earliest political memory is of watching either Reagan or Bush the first on television and hearing my father say "You see that man? He is full of crappola."), is getting a real bat to the skull lately.

Goosebumps, hair-standing on end, a lump in throat, a swelling of pride.... there must be something in my eye. Particularly around 32:00....

And I am also of course mindful that this week celebrates the 88th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which means I can take all these leanings I have and apply them in November.

I know! All through that speech I was thinking "he's actually saying what I (and many others) have been thinking for years--and he's outlining strategies for accomplishing it!" I had to bite down my impulse to whack the side of the tv and say "this isn't some hoax, is it?"

I could go on and on about what I loved but I nearly stood up in my living room and cheered out loud when he made the comments about the flag not being owned by the red states or the blue states, when he directly refuted the crap the Republicans have been pinning on the Democrats for nearly a decade--finally somebody who isn't rolling over or hemming and hawing!

More later on this; probably much more!

PS Oh, and cutting taxes on the poor and middle class and taxing the rich? What a novel idea!

I teared up. For serious. So embarrassing (I still hate crying) and so good at the same time. And Michelle's speech on Monday choked me up as well. As it's been pointed out, first ladies generally aren't expected to be that wonderfully eloquent. Such a fringe benefit!

I also loved the consistent mention of gay rights (Kennedy, Clinton, and most importantly Obama). That tends to be my barometer, civil rights.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm tempted to quote Michelle Obama here but I shall refrain. But, my god. I haven't felt proud of America in a long, long time and it was never this flag-waving, my blood runs red, white and blue kind of pride.

But more than proud, I feel confident. I had my doubts about Obama before (*gasp* blasphemy) but now, I know he's ready. He can win this. We can win this.

Last night was amazing, eh? *happy sigh*
