ADDENDUM: Something that really bothers me (and I realize that perhaps it's "unfair" of me to speak of this since I'm not a monosexual) is the fact that Bechdel in almost all of her work that I've read equates homosexuality with wanting to be the gender you are not (I'm going with the whole "only two genders/gender binary" since that's what she's working with). I really don't think dressing up as a boy when you're a little girl and wanting to be a boy necessarily means you're sexually attracted to only other women, and vice versa. I kinda hate especially how her contribution to It Gets Better (http://alivemagdolene.livejournal.com/391079.html)'s book was (and I'm aware this was a reprinted comic from like 18 years before) her teenage self is depicted as yearning for a suit and wanting to be like Rocky like it's some universal experience of lesbian girls.
That shit just annoys the shit out of me. It's stereotypes and promoting that like it's universal experience (rather than, you know, the thing that ACTUALLY makes your sexual orientation, to whom you're sexually attracted) is part of the reason I had such a hard time finding books and crap that I could relate to as a Queer kid (aside from the fact that "bisexual" was never really mentioned in the sorts of "It's okay if you grow up to be gay!" stuff available when I was a teen). To say nothing of the fact that not only can lesbians be femme (uh, the first supermodel was Gia, A LESBIAN, for one example), straight women can be butch. And straight men can sure as shit be femme and gay men butch, and I also hate how this seems to erase the trans* experience altogether.
Sorry, I need to confine my barely coherent rantings into LJ entries and not responses to thoughtful comments.
PS: I STILL SOMEHOW WANT YOU AND I TO HAVE A JOINT BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH A BRAVE THEME AND MAYBE COSPLAY WITH DRESSES AND WIGS AND SHIT.
