Pretentious Theories
Oct. 17th, 2006 07:47 amEver see the movie Pink Flamingos? No? Moron. Seriously, it's quite the cinema. Here's a pretentious theory I'd like to expand upon:
John Waters biographer Robrt L Pela (not a misspelling, apparently, that's his name) has claimed that Pink Flamingoes has links to Christian theory. He and I will now list preposterous links:
*Divine claims "I am God", in the film.
*Her son's name is Crackers, a slang term for the Holy Eucharist, the body of Christ.
*Their "traveling companion", Miss Cotton, could be a clear link to Mary Magdalene (guess who picked that one?). She holds a sort of sexual relationship with Crackers, and her name implies a white purity that is a great part of the virgin/whore corruption of Christianity of the Pagan ethos of the true meaning of "virgin".
*Ditto for Miss Edie, the mother of God, who has a fascination with eggs, which could well be a symbol for the "mother of God" that is, the pre Christian matriarchal religions, as the egg held potent symbolism: what do child-bearing females produce?
*Connie and Raymond Marble? False prophets that seek to crucify Divine with both legal action and fire (as well as feces) for claiming the right to what they see as their rightful throne of divinity.
*Cookie, Crackers' lover, is the one to expose where Divine lives to the Marbles. Judas, anyone? Also there is the theory that Judas and Jesus Christ were lovers.
Anyone else? C'mon, it's fun!
