LOL, I had the same reaction when I decided to use that quote.
The food's not so much ugly as it is... well, it's not ugly. It's just that I think a pile of candy (particularly like I said, inedible shit like chewing gum-- DON'T YOU KNOW YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO SWALLOW THAT!? IT'S LIKE FINGERNAILS AND... there's something else. Maybe hair.) that's engineered for looks rather than taste is going to, you know, taste good. I'd be willing to tough it out, though. You know. For the cause.
